yeah that at Royal Ascot, it’s a horse racing event where the men have to wear top hats and the women wear what ever they want as long as its big and fits on their head.
Could also easily be the Kentucky derby – they do the crazy hat thing too.

Yes this is defonitely Royal Ascot, ive been there a few times and its great fun seeing what hilarious hats some people can come up with, the horse racing is fun but most people just go for the booze and the chance to wear extravigant outfits =D x

this looks like it’s from Royal Ascot (a festival of horse racing taking part over a few days) “Ladies day” is traditionally when the ladies go beserk with dressing up and try to outdo each other with insane hats. It is not uncommon for people to wear lampshades, in fact that is one of the more tame attempts seen nowadays. This lady seems to have got her game on and probably attracted the attention of the TV cameras reporting on the event – which is generally held to the the main idea – that and to get your photo in the newspaper coverage too.

If the interviews I’ve seen and read and general atmostphere you see on telly are to be believed all of this is firmly tongue in cheek. (I’m too poor to get to go to Ladies’ Day).

The ladies name is Gertrude Shilling her son is a hat designer..she is a wacky British tradition..who very sadly passed on in 1999…she was the belle of Ascot since some time in the early 60′s she is very sadly missed…look her up on the web for some more mad hats
